For Valentine's Day, students in this after school program decided to both celebrate and make a gift for someone special. After researching craft ideas, they voted to make fleece heart pillows. Students planned the project by making a list of materials and supplies needed, and shopping for the celebration and craft event.
Completing the project required the following skills: reading directions, following oral directions, and using math skills to measure fabric. Fine motor skills were needed to trace heart templates onto freezer paper, iron templates onto fabric, cut fabric out, draw and cut lines to make fringe, knot the fringe and finally stuff their colorful creations. Some students worked independently while others required one on one adult support. Happily, all students were able to successfully complete the project.
To celebrate Valentine's Day, Ms. Gray brought fried chicken, the students made macaroni and cheese, and Ms. Harvey and Oseas baked heart cookies! This program is made possible with funding from the Collaboration Council.
